The Bernie is a scholarship fund to assist people of low and moderate income who live in Montgomery County, Maryland, and who receive housing assistance from The Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC) or live in housing owned or managed by Edgewood Management Corporation or by Rockville Housing Enterprises. This scholarship program is for residents who have been out of school and seek vocational or academic training as well as for residents currently in an educational program--high school, college/vocational--or who are preparing for college. Awards will assist with tuition and/or school related expenses.

Who is eligible for a Bernie Scholarship?

You may be eligible if you meet the following requirements:

1. Residency: Applicant must be a resident of Montgomery County, Maryland, in housing owned, managed or administered by HOC, Edgewood Management Corporation, The Scotland Community or by Rockville Housing Enterprises.

2. Applicant must be one of the following:

· a high school senior

· in college or vocational school

· planning to return to school and applying for academic or vocational school assistance

1. Applicant must submit the following application materials:

  1. Attached forms, completed and signed
  2. A transcript
    If in school now, a current high school or college transcript OR
    If not currently enrolled in a school or program, a transcript of the highest level of high school, college, or other educational program completed.
  3. Two (2) recommendations (forms attached)
  4. If you are currently not in school, recommendations should be from caseworkers, adult neighbors, employers or other people who know you well.
  5. Statement of goals
